* 15th April 1921 + 5th August 2015 Lt. Kirkwood completed Pilot Training in 1941. In January 1944 he joined VF-10 flying F6F Hellcats off of the USS Enterprise (CV-6). He gained his first victory over Truk on 17th February 1944 when he shot down a Zeke and was credited with another as a probable. Later he fought in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. In February 1945 he was transfered to the USS Intrepid. Lt. Kirkwood became an ace on 29 March 1945 when he destroyed two Zekes in the ocean area south of Kyushu. |
