* 19th August 1922 + 1st August 2015 Lt.Stafford joined RNZAF in March 1942. In November 1943 he was assigned to 486 Squadron equipped with Hawker Typhoons, later with Hawker Tempest. During the period 19 June to 29 August 1944, Stafford shot down eight V1s over Southern England. In late September 1944 Stafford covered the airborne invasion to capture Arnhem and the Nijmegan Bridges. On Christmas Day 1944, Stafford shot down the first confirmed Me 262 for 486 Squadron. In the May of 1945, he was awarded the DFC. |
